Empowering Tomorrow's Innovators: Celebrating Women, Girls, and Inventors on February 11th

Updated: Feb 22

February 11 marks a doubly special occasion - it's a day dedicated to celebrating the remarkable contributions of women and girls in science, as well as honoring the inventors who have created the numerous inventions we rely on today and in the future.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science not only honors the women and girls who have made major contributions to science but also is a day used to promote the inclusion of women and girls in STEM. With more women in these fields, the world gets fresh and diverse perspectives.

Sharing stories of those who have broken barriers and made major contributions in STEM encourages and inspires young girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

Equally important is celebrating National Inventors Day. This day is dedicated to recognizing the enormous contribution inventors make to the world.

Thanks to inventors, we can do anything at night thanks to light bulbs, drive from one city to the next in our cars, speak to others on the other side of the world through our phones, and be entertained by movie and shows on TV.

Many inventors don’t receive recognition for their work until after their death while other get to celebrate during their life.

Fun Fact: February 11 was chosen for this day beside it was Thomas Edison’s birthday, one of the greatest inventors of all time.

What are some ways to celebrate this day with your kids?

There are many ways to celebrate and my favorite way is…READING!

Read non-fiction books about trailblazers who made discoveries and invented products you cannot live without, and read fiction stories where your child can image themselves as a scientist, engineer, or inventor!

To help you with this, I have teamed up with a few amazing authors to offer you

15 FREE e-books for 3 days only!

From February 11 to February 13, you can download and read these books for free.

I have also teamed up with a fellow mompreneur (IG: ms_nehaj) to bring to you a free activities packet to go along with my highly rated picture book biography “Reach for the Stars Like Kalpana.”

This activities packet includes:

·        a word search,

·        a writing prompt,

·        a constellations creation activity, and

·        a role play activity.

Ms_NehaJ will also be posting videos to go along with this activity packet. Be sure to follow her so you don't miss the video!

Wait…there’s more!

I’ve created a free printable that teaches your children about 10 Inspirational Kid Inventors they (and you) may not have heard about.

Download, print, and read with your kids. Then go online and learn more about each kid inventor. This may inspire your kids to create something to help solve a problem they are passionate about.

Aside from these wonderful free resources, you can also celebrate today by:

  • Visiting a science museum, exhibition, or planetarium.

  • Performing a DIY science experiment or DIY project at home.

  • Visiting a local (or virtual) event that is celebrating this day. (Where I live, there is a day of STEM at one of the colleges for kids to attend and experience hands on experiments and activities.)

  • Experimenting with building simple machines using household items.

  • Having a family discussion about the importance of women's contributions to science and innovation.

  • Trying out coding or programming games and activities online or attend a workshop or class in person.

  • Watching TED talks or videos featuring female scientists and inventors.

  • Creating a scavenger hunt with science-related clues.

  • Playing science-themed board games or puzzles.

  • Interviewing family or friends who works in a STEM-related career

All these activities can help spark curiosity, inspire creativity, and foster a love for science and innovation in children while celebrating the achievements of women and girls in STEM fields.
