Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month: Fun Facts and Activities for Kids


May is AAPI Heritage Month, a time to celebrate and honor the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to our society. This month is significant because it recognizes the history, culture, and achievements of these communities, and raises awareness about the challenges they have faced and continue to face. AAPI Heritage Month also provides an opportunity for all of us to learn and appreciate the diverse experiences and perspectives of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.


AAPI Heritage Month includes the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Each of these countries has its unique culture, history, and traditions, which contribute to the rich diversity of the AAPI community.


Did you know?

1. AAPI Heritage Month was first recognized in 1978 as "Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week" by Congress. It was expanded to a month-long celebration in 1992.

2. AAPI Heritage Month was chosen to be in May to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to honor the completion of the transcontinental railroad, which was largely built by Chinese immigrants on May 10, 1869.

3. AAPIs are the fastest-growing racial group in the United States, with a population of about 24 million as of 2020.

4. AAPI Heritage Month is celebrated not only in the United States but also in Canada, Australia and New Zealand which have significant AAPI populations.

5. AAPIs have made significant contributions across multiples fields including STEM, medicine, the arts, and business.
