Promoting Good Mental Health in Children

May is known as Mental Health Awareness Month, which, as the name indicates, is a time to raise awareness about mental health and promote the importance of taking care of one's mental health.

As a parent, it is essential to educate your children about mental health and promote activities that can help them maintain good mental health.

Explaining Mental Health to Elementary School Children

Children as young as elementary school age can be introduced to the concept of mental health. Below is an example of how you can explain this concept to them:

Mental health is all about how we feel on the inside. Just like we take care of our bodies by eating healthy food and exercising, we also need to take care of our minds by doing things that make us happy and calm.

Sometimes, we feel sad, angry, or worried. And that’s okay! It's normal to have such feelings. But it's important to talk about those feelings with someone we trust, like a parent, teacher, or friend. Talking about our feelings can help us feel better and understand why we're feeling that way.

If you feel comfortable, you can even explain the concept of a therapist:

When you feel sick, you go to a doctor. When you are feeling really upset or angry and having a hard time dealing with such emotions, we can go to a special doctor called a therapist who will help us understand and work through our feelings so that we can feel better.

Activities to Promote Good Mental Health

As parents, we can promote good mental health right at home through various activities:

  • Exercise: Encourage your child to participate in activities they enjoy, such as sports, dance, or outdoor play. Such activities naturally improve your mood.

  • Mindfulness: Teach your child to focus on the present moment and be aware of their thoughts and feelings without judgment. You can practice mindfulness with them through activities like deep breathing or yoga.

  • Creative activities: Engage your child in creative activities like painting, drawing, or writing. These activities can help them express their emotions and relieve stress.

  • Spending time with family and friends: Encourage your child to spend time with their loved ones. Social connections can help boost mood and reduce stress.

  • Eating healthy: Proper nutrition is important for both physical and mental health. Encourage your child to eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

  • Getting enough sleep: Adequate sleep is essential for good mental health. Ensure that your child gets enough sleep every night.

  • Reading: Reading with elementary school children helps promote good mental health by improving their cognitive development, reducing stress and anxiety, and fostering a sense of empathy and emotional intelligence.

  • Practicing gratitude: Encourage your child to focus on the positive aspects of their life by practicing gratitude. They can start by writing down things they are thankful for every day.

  • Learning new skills: Learning new skills can boost self-esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment. Encourage your child to explore their interests and try new things.

  • Time outdoors: Spending time in nature can help reduce stress and improve mood. Encourage your child to play outside, go for a walk or hike, or participate in other outdoor activities.

Identifying Mental Health Issues in Friends

Elementary school children can learn to identify when their friends may be struggling with their mental health. Signs may include changes in behavior, mood, or social interactions. If your child notices that a friend seems sad or is not participating like he/she used to, encourage them to reach out and offer support. They can let their friend know they are there to listen and help them find resources, such as talking to a trusted adult.

Book Recommendations:

Here is a list of books I recommend which will help parents to discuss emotions:
