St. Patrick's Day is celebrated each year on March 17th, in honor of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland who is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. While St. Patrick's Day is a religious holiday in Ireland, over time it has become a popular celebration of Irish culture and identity around the world. From the wearing of green to parades and traditional foods, there are many ways people celebrate this day.
St. Patrick's Day is a national holiday in Ireland, which means that schools and businesses are closed for the day. It is a day to spend with family and friends and many gather for meals or parties to celebrate. Some of the traditional foods eaten are corned beef, cabbage, Irish soda bread, and Shepard’s pie.
There are parades and festivals held across the country and many attend Mass as it is a religious holiday.
Wearing green is a popular way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Ireland. People wear green clothes, hats, and accessories. Decorations like shamrocks and flags are used in Ireland but are subtle.
St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated outside of Ireland as well to honor Irish culture and heritage. There are some similarities like wearing green, hosting parades, eating traditionally foods, and attending mass.
But there are other ways people outside of Ireland celebrate:
- Eat and drink green-colored foods and beverages, such as green milkshakes or green cupcakes
- Hosting Irish themed parties or cultural events
- Lighting up landmarks like the Empire State Building in New York City and the Colosseum in Rome (The Chicago River is also dyed green every year)
- Shamrocks, leprechauns, and other Irish-themed decorations are often used to decorate homes and businesses (not subtly like in Ireland)
St. Patrick's Day is a holiday that celebrates Irish culture and heritage, as well as the life and legacy of St. Patrick. So, whether you're Irish or not, don't forget to wear green and join in on the festivities!

Did you know?
Leprechauns are mythological creatures from Irish folklore. They are typically defined as small, mischievous beings who are skilled at making shoes and possess a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. According to legend, if you catch a leprechaun, they will grant you three wishes in exchange for their release.
But now, leprechauns are often shown as cute and friendly creatures, and their image is often used in St. Patrick's Day decorations, such as on greeting cards or in parade floats.
